Plagiarism Policy
Plagiarism Policy
Purpose
Advances in Tropical Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences (ATBES) upholds the highest standards of academic integrity. Plagiarism is unethical, constitutes misconduct, and is unacceptable. This policy defines what constitutes plagiarism, how submissions are screened, and the actions that will be taken when plagiarism is detected.
Definition of Plagiarism
Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, presenting another person’s work, ideas, words, images, or data as your own without proper acknowledgement or citation. It applies regardless of whether the material is published or unpublished, in print or electronic form.
| Type | Description & Examples |
|---|---|
| Verbatim Plagiarism | Copying text word-for-word without quotation marks, citation, or permission — even if some words are changed or sentences are rearranged. |
| Paraphrasing Plagiarism | Rewriting another author’s ideas, arguments, or findings in your own words without acknowledging the original source. |
| Self-Plagiarism | Reusing significant portions of your own previously published work without proper citation or without indicating that the material has appeared elsewhere. Submitting the same work to multiple journals simultaneously is also considered a form of redundant publication. |
| Idea & Concept Plagiarism | Adopting a unique approach, theory, or interpretation from another source without attribution. |
| Data & Visual Plagiarism | Using figures, tables, photographs, datasets, or research results without permission and proper credit. |
Screening Procedure
- All submitted manuscripts are screened using professional plagiarism detection software before being sent for peer review.
- The similarity report is reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief or assigned editor.
- A similarity score of 15% or higher from a single source, or 25% or higher overall, will trigger further review. Excessive similarity may result in immediate rejection without review.
- Quotations, references, and common phrases are excluded from the assessment.
- If concerns are raised, authors may be asked to revise and resubmit or provide a written explanation.
Responsibilities of Authors
- Ensure that all work is original and written in your own words.
- Always cite the original source when using information from other publications.
- Place direct quotations within quotation marks and include a full citation.
- Do not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time.
- Reference your own previous publications appropriately if building upon them.
- Obtain written permission from the copyright holder before reproducing copyrighted material, and include proper acknowledgement.
When Plagiarism Is Detected
Depending on the severity and stage of publication, the journal will take appropriate action:
| Stage | Action |
|---|---|
| Before Review | Manuscript rejected; authors notified of the specific concerns. |
| Under Review | Review process stopped; manuscript withdrawn; reasons recorded in the editorial system. |
| After Acceptance | Publication delayed or cancelled; authors given opportunity to respond; acceptance revoked if confirmed. |
| After Publication | Article retracted; retraction notice published prominently and linked to the article; relevant institutions notified; correction or removal considered only if the issue is minor and promptly addressed. |
| Repeated or Severe Cases | Restriction from submitting to ATBES for a period of 2–5 years; co-authors may also be notified; information shared with relevant bodies and funding agencies where appropriate. |
Appeal Process
Authors who disagree with the finding of plagiarism may submit a written appeal to the Editor-in-Chief within 14 days of notification. The appeal must clearly explain the basis for disagreement and provide supporting evidence. The editorial board’s decision after review of the appeal is final.
Prevention Guidelines
- Keep detailed notes during research and writing to distinguish your ideas from those of your sources.
- Use reference management software to organise citations and avoid missing acknowledgements.
- Check your manuscript against the journal’s Guidelines for Authors before submission.
- Authors are encouraged to run their manuscripts through similarity-checking tools prior to submission.
