Authorship Criteria

Principles of Authorship

Authorship in Advances in Tropical Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences (ATBES) is based on significant, substantive contributions to the research work. Inclusion of an individual as an author indicates responsibility and accountability for the content and integrity of the published work. Honorary, Gift, or Ghost authorship are not permitted.

Criteria for Authorship

All listed authors must have made a substantial contribution to the manuscript in at least three of the following categories, and must have approved the final version before submission:

Contribution Category Description
Conceptualization Conceived the research idea, defined the problem, formulated hypotheses, or designed the study framework.
Methodology & Investigation Designed or developed methods; conducted fieldwork, experiments, sampling, data collection, or laboratory analysis; acquired and validated data.
Formal Analysis & Interpretation Processed and analysed data; performed statistical or computational modelling; interpreted results and drew conclusions; visualised findings.
Writing & Revision Drafted the manuscript; critically reviewed, revised, or substantially improved the intellectual content; contributed to discussion and conclusions.
Supervision & Resources Provided overall supervision, project administration, or leadership; secured funding, equipment, or institutional support; managed the research team.

Corresponding Author Responsibilities

The Corresponding Author serves as the primary point of contact between the journal and all co-authors. Their responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that the order of authorship has been agreed upon by all contributors before submission;
  • Confirming that every listed author meets the criteria above and has approved the final manuscript;
  • Collecting and submitting signed copyright, conflict of interest, and ethical statements from all authors where required;
  • Coordinating responses to reviewers, revisions, and proofs;
  • Communicating editorial decisions and important notifications to all co-authors;
  • Notifying the journal promptly if there are any changes in authorship or contact information after submission.

Order of Authors

The order of authors is determined by the collective contribution of each individual. The first author is generally the person who made the most significant contribution to the work. The corresponding author and/or senior author typically appear last. Changes to author order or addition/removal of names after submission require written agreement signed by all affected authors.

Contributors Not Qualifying as Authors

Individuals who provided assistance but do not meet the authorship criteria should be acknowledged separately in the Acknowledgements section. This may include:

  • Technical support or routine laboratory assistance;
  • Provision of samples, datasets, or materials without involvement in the study design or analysis;
  • General supervision or administrative oversight not directly related to the specific research;
  • Language editing or proofreading services.

Declaration of Contributions

Upon submission, authors are encouraged to include a brief statement specifying the role of each author, for example:

Author A: Conceptualization, Methodology, Formal Analysis, Writing — Original Draft
Author B: Investigation, Data Curation, Visualization
Author C: Supervision, Writing — Review & Editing, Funding Acquisition

Violations

If authorship misconduct is identified — including unauthorised inclusion, exclusion, or false attribution — the journal may issue a correction, retract the article, or suspend submission privileges for the involved authors.
