Abstract

The Balinese folktale Mayadenawa is considered to be full of meanings. The story originates from the Usana Bali manuscript which tells of the battle between King Mayadenawa and Bhatara Indra and his armies. The data for this article was taken from the research on Mayadenawa story, The descriptive qualitative method is used to analyse it. The semiotic theory developed by Barthes was applied to uncover the meanings of denotation and connotation, leading to the creation of myths and ideologies underlying the story. Semiotics is recognized as a theory concerning signs and their meanings in society, as developed by Barthes. Barthes discusses myths through the process of connotation, which extends de Saussure’s model of signifier and signified and exists within society. The emphasis of Barthes’ theory in this research is placed on connotation and myth. According to Barthes, a sign is viewed as a dyadic concept, consisting of two distinct yet interrelated components (denotation and connotation) within a structure referred to by de Saussure as signifiant (an acoustic image rather than an acoustic entity). The results indicate that the origin of a place names Tukad Petanu is recounted, where the river was first poisoned by Sang Kalawong before being purified by Bhatara Indra into toya empul (Tirta Empul). Additionally, the formation of Tukad Petanu (Petanu River) from the flow of Mayadenawa’s blood is described. Mayadenawa was defeat by Bhatara Indra is commemorated in the celebration of Galungan Day as a representation of dharma’s (goodness) victory over adharma (badness).
