Abstract

Women in various spheres of social life are often labeled with negative images. Several traditional Balinese literary works portray a mystical image of women, depicting their association with esoteric teachings commonly referred to in Bali as ilmu hitam (black magic or ngiwa). The narratives in these works suggest that women are perceived to have a resonance with the presence of magical forces in Bali. Literary texts such as Cerita Tangting Mas and Tangting Rat, Angling Dharma, Dukuh Suladri, and Ni Puyung Sugih illustrate the complexity of female characters in the midst of social dynamics related to mystical beliefs that are attributed to women. Traditional Balinese literature, particularly those with mystical themes, often necessitates the presence of female characters. These women are frequently portrayed as possessing mystical powers that transcend ordinary physical strength.
