Abstract

Geoeconomic fragmentation has changed how multinational companies make cross-border investment decisions. Geopolitical alignment has now become a key factor influencing the direction of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), shifting away from the previously dominant economic efficiency. This study aims to map the influence of Geopolitical Risk (GPR) on FDI through the increasingly disrupted Global Value Chain (GVC) mechanism. Bibliometric analysis was conducted on 216 Scopus-indexed articles from 2016 to 2026 using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny, with the goal of identifying publication trends, thematic clusters, and transmission channels of geopolitical risk on investment decisions. The analysis results show that annual publications grew by 17.85 percent, with nine main thematic clusters. China emerged as the most discussed country in the context of FDI in the existing literature. GPR influences FDI indirectly through two main channels: economic policy uncertainty (EPU), which hinders investment decisions, and GVC disruptions, which hinder multinational operations. This study highlights a paradigm shift from efficiency-seeking FDI toward security-seeking FDI, encouraging a reassessment of the relevance of the traditional OLI Framework in the geoeconomic context.
