Abstract

Divorce has increasingly become a significant social issue affecting family dynamics in Indonesia, including in West Kalimantan Province. This study aims to examine the influence of age at first marriage, average years of schooling, and poverty levels on divorce rates in West Kalimantan. The study applies a quantitative approach using panel data regression based on secondary data from 2018–2024 obtained from Statistics Indonesia and reports from Religious Courts across West Kalimantan. The most appropriate estimation model, determined through Chow and Hausman tests, is the fixed-effects model. The findings indicate that poverty has a positive and statistically significant effect on divorce rates, suggesting that higher levels of poverty are associated with a greater likelihood of marital dissolution. Age at first marriage also shows a positive relationship with divorce incidence. In contrast, the average years of schooling demonstrate a negative and significant effect on divorce, implying that higher educational attainment tends to reduce the probability of divorce. Collectively, these variables explain approximately 92.14 percent of the variation in divorce rates.

These results highlight the crucial role of socio-economic conditions in maintaining household stability. Strengthening educational attainment and improving economic well-being may therefore serve as effective strategies to reduce divorce rates.
