Research ethics violations include fabrication, falsification, citation manipulation, and plagiarism during the design, conduct, or review of research, as well as in the writing or reporting of research findings. If an author is found to have engaged in research misconduct or other serious irregularities concerning an article published in Jurnal Humanis, the editors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record.
The initial step in this process is to determine the validity of the allegation and assess whether it falls within the definition of research misconduct. This stage also involves examining whether the party raising the allegation has any relevant conflicts of interest.
If scientific misconduct or other substantial research irregularities are suspected, the allegation will be referred to the corresponding author, who will be asked to provide a detailed response on behalf of all co-authors. Once the response has been received and evaluated, further investigation and the involvement of experts (such as statistical reviewers or subject-matter experts) may be necessary. In cases where misconduct is considered unlikely to have occurred, an appropriate course of action may be to publish a clarification, conduct additional analyses, or both, in the form of a letter to the editor. This may often be accompanied by a correction notice and amendments to the published article.
Institutions are expected to conduct appropriate and thorough investigations into allegations of scientific misconduct. Ultimately, authors, journals, and institutions bear significant responsibilities for ensuring the accuracy of the scholarly record. By addressing concerns regarding scientific misconduct appropriately and taking the necessary actions based on the evaluation of such concerns—such as issuing a correction, retracting and replacing an article, or retracting an article—Jurnal Humanis will continue to fulfill its responsibility to safeguard the validity and integrity of the scholarly record. The explanation of research ethics violations refers to the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which are available at https://publicationethics.org/misconduct.
Article Retraction
Articles published in Jurnal Humanis will be considered for retraction if there is clear evidence that:
1. The research findings are unreliable, either as a result of research misconduct (e.g., data fabrication) or unintentional errors (e.g., miscalculations or experimental errors);
2. The findings have previously been published elsewhere without appropriate cross-referencing, permission, or justification (i.e., cases of duplicate or redundant publication);
3. The article contains plagiarism; or
4. The article involves unethical research.
