Abstract

The utilization of biomass for renewable energy production is one of solutions that increased the renewable energy mix and promoted sustainable agricultural production. Jombang regency produced main agricultural commodities, including: rice, corn, soybeans, coffee, sugarcane, and tobacco. Agricultural extensification efforts through the land optimization program (OPLAH) in this region are targeted to increase agricultural production by 2025. Increasing agricultural production will linearly increase the amount of biomass of commodities. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the energy potential of biomass by analyzing biomass availability calculated based on the amount of agricultural products and the availability of unutilized biomass with consideration of its use as animal feed. The potential energy is determined by the heating value of each type biomass. The objective of this study was to measure the potential of unutilized biomass from agricultural activities in Jombang Regency. The results in statistical analysis approach indicated that unutilized agricultural biomass was  861.123,75 tons annually, with the largest share compromised by corn stalks (40,21% ) and rice straw (25,65%). The potential energy yield was 14.954.923,91 GJ/year. The potential developing biomass for energy production can contribute advancing the development of renewable energy and indirectly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuel combustion
