Value Added of Coconut Agroindustry Products in Sungai Geringging District Padang Pariaman Regency West Sumatera Province

Abstract

Sungai Geringging District is a center for coconut production in Padang Pariaman Regency. Due to its extensive land area and high production volume, coconut is designated as one of the region's leading commodities. This opportunity can be leveraged by agroindustrial actors to process coconuts into derivative products with high added value. This study aims to analyze the added value of coconut agroindustrial products namely copra, Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), and shell charcoal in Sungai Geringging District, Padang Pariaman Regency. The research was conducted in December 2020, encompassing several stages: determining the study location, interviewing respondents, collecting and analyzing data using the Hayami method, and calculating the added value of the coconut agroindustrial products. Respondents for this study were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of three business actors, namely the head of the Cahaya Fajar farmers group, a producer, and the largest processor of white copra and coconut shell charcoal in Sungai Geringging District (Mr. Awal). The results of the value-added analysis using the Hayami method indicate that the copra processing agroindustry generates an added value of IDR 2,610.003/kg with a value-added ratio of 60.231%; VCO yields IDR 13,400/kg with a value-added ratio of 83.750%; and shell charcoal generates IDR 1,136.756/kg with a value-added ratio of 98.519%. Coconut processing agroindustries that yield high added value are highly profitable for business actors and can serve as a strategic consideration for coconut farmers to process their own plantation yields, thereby increasing their income.
