GAYA HIDUP MEMBACA MAHASISWA: STUDI KASUS MAHASISWA DI PERPUSTAKAAN STDI IMAM SYAFI'I JEMBER

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reading lifestyle of students at the Library of STDI Imam Syafi'i Jember and to identify the factors influencing their reading habits as well as the library’s role in fostering a culture of literacy. The study employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. The participants consisted of five active students and one librarian selected through the snowball sampling technique. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students’ reading lifestyles are primarily driven by academic needs, supported by religious motivation and self-development. Students utilize the library as a comfortable learning environment with relevant collections, particularly Islamic literature and academic references. Technological advancements have also encouraged the emergence of a hybrid reading pattern through the use of printed books, e-books, scholarly articles, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies. Nevertheless, reading habits continue to face challenges, including the dominance of social media, limited time, and low interest in recreational reading. This study concludes that the library plays a strategic role in strengthening the culture of literacy by providing relevant collections, adequate facilities, information services, and literacy programs that encourage the development of sustainable reading lifestyles among university students.
